2024 marked an exciting milestone for Circability!

During the month of October, our four centres in Auckland, Christchurch, the Bay of Plenty, and Kaitaia each hosted curated versions of the community-building event entitled Kanohi Kitea - a term to express the importance of meeting people face to face.

Kanohi Kitea is a Circability initiative to develop ongoing whanaungatanga hui and partnerships that explore the aspirations and relationships between Toi Māori practitioners, Whare Tapere and Social Circus arts.

With all we have learned, and all we are still learning, we aim to make Kanohi Kitea a beacon for a truly unique style of circus that could only be created in Aotearoa, and says much about our cultural identity, from our Polynesian origins to our foundational-bicultural history, and our cosmopolitan present and future.

As Dr. Te Ahukaramū says, we are in such a state of cultural catch-up. If we can continue building on the foundations set in 2022’s Kanohi Kitea, we will play our part in weaving many revitalised indigenous values into our cultural fabric, leaving behind a better country for future generations.

Kanohi Kitea

An event to unite with like-minded people to discuss our kaupapa and how we can unite in a shared vision to bring together something incredible.

"I think it could be the most important event for the circus sector this year".
